About

The Public Health Club (PHC) is an independent, student-initiated organization actively involved in providing service to the community. It is recognized by the Student Government Association and the University and is comprised of students from the colleges of Health Sciences, Osteopathic Medicine, and Pharmacy.

The PHC was founded in fall 2006 with the objective of educating and helping the underserved Vallejo community. The club strives to promote healthy lifestyle choices and provide education on important public health issues. The Public Health Club is part of the #ProtectOurPatients Coalition at TU, which supports legislation and policies that ensure accessibility, affordability, and quality of health care to all Californians, especially vulnerable and marginalized communities.

A notable accomplishment of the Club was the establishment of a partnership in 2006 with the Vallejo City Unified School District to create and develop the Nutrition & Exercise Unified (TUNE-UP) Program, an after school program, in which club members work with students from Mare Island Elementary School to taught and promoted healthy eating and physical activity. Club members also regularly attended the Vallejo Farmer’s Market each weekend to obtain fruit at low cost to distribute to the elementary students in the TUNE-UP Program and provided and routine screenings and health education to patrons of the market.
